India Can Reach $20 Trillion Economy by 2036 with Key Reforms: Equirus Report

India has the potential to transform into a $20 trillion economy by 2036, provided the country executes a comprehensive package of 20 strategic reforms, according to a new report by financial services firm Equirus.

The study highlights that achieving this milestone will require a combination of accelerated economic growth, currency stability, and targeted structural changes across major financial and industrial sectors.

Key Levers for a $20 Trillion Economy by 2036

According to the Equirus report, reaching the $20 trillion mark over the next twelve years will require a 14.2 percent annual growth rate in rupee terms. A stronger Indian rupee alongside faster domestic growth are cited as crucial factors to sustain this trajectory.

The report identifies five primary growth engines that could unlock the country’s next phase of expansion, assuming the full suite of policy measures is implemented effectively.

Railways Listing, Tax, and Capital Market Reforms

To support this expansion, Equirus outlines specific structural recommendations. Among the proposals is the public listing of key state assets, including Indian Railways, to drive capital efficiency and raise resources.

The report also emphasizes the need for comprehensive tax reforms and broader capital-market adjustments to improve market liquidity, attract investments, and build a resilient framework for long-term growth.
